Content Related Instruction (CRI) for G5-G6th in Elementary School English Activities: Things to do after retelling a story
東海林 明美(愛知淑徳大学大学院生)
The purpose of this study is to examine Content Related Instruction (CRI) for G5-G6 students in Elementary School English Activities classes. The Ministry of Education presented a draft of new teaching guidelines for elementary and middle school on 15 February, 2008. Under this new guideline, official English classes will start for G5-G6 students once a week at elementary schools starting in fiscal 2011.
My research will attempt to discover effective CRI English teaching methods that will be of interest and motivate G5-G6 students. The objective of the study is to discover if it is possible to concurrently acquire subject content, English language skills, and international understanding. Most elementary schoolteachers are not proficient in English, but they are familiar with subject contents. My hypothesis is that CRI will help improve students’ reading literacy by using English language picture books during content enrichment activities. Data from comparative field work in Japanese and Canadian elementary schools will be used in the study.
