How to Maximize Survey Response Rates on Google Forms: An Application of Dornyei's Principles

Especially while using online surveys, educational researchers want to increase response rates from students and/or teachers. However, response rates to online surveys are typically low. Respondents often do not answer the survey if they do not feel a connection, and online surveys can be impersonal. Thus, response rates remain low. This presentation will offer suggestions from Dornyei on how researchers can transform their surveys in order to maximize commitment among respondents. Dornyei offers some unconventional advice such as waiting to ask for personal information until the end of the survey. An initial request for personal information from respondents often seems cold and uncaring. This can substantially reduce response rates. Other areas that reduce response rate including survey design, question formatting, execution timing, etc. will also be discussed and applied specifically to the online survey platform Google Forms.
