+It is suggested that strategies are especially important for language learning as tools for active, self-directed involvement, which is essential for developing communicative competence (Oxford, 1990). Research shows that the importance of learning strategies lies in their interaction with learner autonomy (O’Malley and Chamot, 1990; Benson, 2006) and learner motivation (Oxford, 1990). Therefore, in order to develop learner autonomy and increase learner motivation, teaching learning strategies and learning styles, which can be achieved through strategy training, is proposed. To examine the effectiveness of strategy training, the writer carried out a training course with some Japanese learners of English, studying at a university of Aichi Prefecture.
+Results of the study showed that the participants’ awareness of using learning strategies, especially affective strategies, social strategies and cognitive strategies, increased after the short-term instruction, that their motivation, especially intrinsic motivation, for learning English had been increased, and that they had become more independent in the learning process.
