This presentation questions the supposed benefits that the long-awaited “disruption” or “revolution” in the educational sector was supposed to have ushered in with the widespread adoption of remote learning this year. It suggests that rather than abandoning conventional physical classroom methodologies to embrace virtual ones, we instead rethink mutually reinforcing relationships among the various tools at our disposal. The first part aims to extract insights from premodern historical precedents and apply them to English teaching in Japan today. The second part examines some exciting opportunities and worrisome trends that administrators, parents, students, and teachers have begun to glimpse not only in some of the ad-hoc responses to the pandemic but also in the carefully planned and executed virtual educational offerings. Finally, the third part looks ahead to next year and considers how we can better adapt to the post-COVID-19 educational environment.
