Effects of Negotiation of Meaning on Lexical Acquisition in Computer-Mediated Communication

The study investigated the effect of negotiation of meaning among sixteen Japanese EFL learners on their lexical acquisition in computer-mediated communication, especially focusing on the differential learning processes that participants engage in during a single negotiation routine and detailed analysis of text data basing on NNS-NNS negotiation model (Varonis & Gass, 1985). With more than 2/3 words being negotiated and participants making significant progress in lexical acquisition, the result can be interpreted as supportive for the Interaction Hypothesis (Long, 1996). The comparison between interaction and list-provided interaction learning suggested that both processes facilitate lexical acquisition, with list-provided interaction especially helpful in retention of word recognition. Text data revealed massive usage of rephrasing, expansion and deduction testing, which allowed learners to acquire more comprehensible input facilitating acquisition. The data also revealed preemptive input interaction and the usage of keyboard symbol, which can be seen as the exclusive features of computer-mediated negotiation.
