+ | Learners' English often seems to be unnatural, even if the sentences are grammatically correct. Focusing on cohesion and coherence, this study analyzed 1,020 essays written by 112 Japanese learners and 20 native speakers. Based on the framework of Halliday & Hasan (1976), we extracted cohesive devices in the essays and asked three American readers to evaluate the unnaturalness of 100 randomly-chosen essays in light of cohesion and coherence with 5-point Likert scales. The results showed that there were differences between L1 and L2 in terms of the usage of connectives and pronouns. For example, while L2 learners overused “so” and “I” and underused “and” and “it” as cohesive devices, L1 speakers showed the opposite tendencies. It was also revealed that L2 essays were unlikely to have concrete examples or cause-effect relationships. It may be concluded that unnatural use of such cohesive devices and poor coherence should affect overall essay quality. More concrete examples will be shown and discussed in the presentation. | ||
