A different role of vocabulary knowledge in reading comprehension: A case of Japanese learners of English
発表概要
Many studies on the effect of vocabulary knowledge (VK) on reading comprehension (RC) agree with the power of VK. However, few studies consider which feature of VK actually plays a role in predicting RC. Hence, the present study investigated two aspects of VK (breadth and depth) on the RC (TOEIC and TOEFL items) of 71 Japanese learners of English, using one depth and two breadth tests, and looked into the correlational and predictive relationship among the variables. We found (i) the breadth tests correlated only with TOEFL scores; (ii) only one breadth test uniquely predicted TOEFL scores; (iii) the depth test neither correlated with nor predicted RC. Based on the results from (i) and (ii), we indicate that the test format might affect an aspect of the measurability of the participants’ ability. From the result of (iii), we argue the role of VK in RC in terms of measurable features.
