Creating a Communicative Teaching Environment in an Online Synchronous Japanese Classroom
- John Andras Molnar (金城学院大学)
発表概要
Teaching in an online, synchronous (live) classroom creates unique challenges such as maintaining student focus and encouraging student interaction when all members of the class are in different physical locations. In this session, the presenter will detail his own experience teaching both elementary Japanese I and II courses online to college students in the United States. With research showing that current students prefer problem solving and group work as opposed to lectures, and connecting course content to the real world, the presenter will show collaborative exercises to enhance the communicative aspect of the classroom while allowing the teacher to step back and take the roll of facilitator rather than instructor. Tools include blogs, live collaborative games, shared group work quizzes, and online language partners. The presenter found that strategies in the online classroom were easily adapted to the traditional classroom, improving communicative teaching there as well.
